Rhonda Smith, Minerva Director, co-edited this comprehensive book on the use of insects as a sustainable source of protein with contributions from authors across the globe from research, as well as established and start-up companies.

“And it couldn’t have come at a better time, “ says Rhonda, “as the EU law changed on 1st September to allow insect protein into pig and poultry feed, following up on its lawful use in aquaculture. This step change creates added impetus to this already vibrant sector.”

As well as co-editing the whole book with Heidi Hall of animal feed company Anpario plc and Dr Elaine Fitches of Durham University UK, Rhonda created case studies of ten companies developing or delivering insect protein for livestock. Reading these stories will not only inform but also inspire others to enter the sector.

Working on the book built on Minerva’s experience leading on policy development and international media communications for the EU-funded project PROteINSECT which helped the drive to the first EU policy change, allowing insect protein into feed for farmed fish.

Rhonda continues: “As a company, Minerva is committed to improving sustainability across sectors, so we are thrilled to have had the opportunity to work on the PROteINSECT project and for me personally to work on the book, promoting development of this sustainable source of protein for animal feed.”

The book, published by CABI, is available to purchase as an eBook or hard copy. https://www.cabi.org/bookshop/book/9781789245929/
